Yards & Gods Fall Ball

Yards & Gods is a collective of musicians — a label of sorts — who have lived in or currently live in Columbia. This year is the third annual Fall Ball. It’s a showcase of Y&G bands at Eastside Tavern where everyone is encouraged to dress up like they’re going to a high school dance and watch a bunch of free local music. Psych-pop-rock-noise-ambient-folk stuff. On top of that, it’s free (though you can donate to help cover costs of the web hosting and other things). Here is the info from the Facebook event page:

Saturday, Nov. 5, 8pm. Eastside Tavern.
You are cordially invited (in a super non-cordial way via Facebook) to the Third Annual Yards & Gods Fall Ball! “What is that?” you ask. Why, it is a lavish event where we turn Columbia’s Eastside Tavern into a highschool prom (complete with fake flower petals and stuff) and party down to the sounds of your favorite (?) Yards & Gods bands. “Who are my favorite Yards & Gods bands?” you ask. Hell if I know! But this year, these people are playing (listed in alphabetical order, but playing in arm-wrestling order):

–Claque (CoMO ex-pat Jacob Kruger and his merry men)
–Conceal & Carry (Another CoMO ex-pat, Carrie Wade)
–Deep Sky Catalog (Logan Epps, Michael Hopkins, Zach Biri, Ben Chlapek)
–Jowlz (Billy Haring, Josh Cochran, Ben Chlapek, Ted Sharp, Zach Biri, Michael Hopkins, Chad Maize)
–Neatly Knotted (Ben Chlapek)
–Maybe more!

August Mixtape Exchange

On the last Tuesday of every month there are some folks who trade mixtapes/CDs at the KOPN radio station on Broadway. It’s a fairly diverse group, and the goal is to show people music you like or music you think they might like. Most people bring around 10 copies of their mix (the more you bring, the more you can take home) and there is usually some Shakespeare’s Pizza. The group will meet at 3:00pm tomorrow (8/30) to trade mixes and hangout for an hour or two. Everyone is welcome…make those mixes!

CoMo Events : Art Show and Book Signing

I’m going to talk about my art show and book signing in third person so as to not make it sound like a journal entry. Here we go…

Local concert poster artist and graphic designer Ben Chlapek will be camped out at Makes Scents (on Ninth St. next to Sparky’s) for Artrageous Friday on July 22, 6-9pm. He’ll be signing copies of The Indie Rock Poster Book, which features his illustration of Elliott Smith’s song King’s Crossing, as well as 29 other song-inspired pieces from artist all over the globe. The 11″ x 14″ has removable pages and was published by Chronicle earlier this year. Copies will be available for $25.

In addition to the book signing, Chlapek will have a handful of new drawings, a new postcard set, screen printed posters, and a free mini print and stickers for people who purchase the book. See more of Chlapek’s work at www.neversleeping.com
