CoMo Foodie Find : 5 Generations Salsa

5 Gen Salsa Columbia, Missouri food

Last weekend I braved the King’s Daughters Festival in search of new Missouri finds to highlight here on the blog. It took a bit of digging through the Egyptian cotton sheets and personalized coozies, but I did find a few stand out items.

One of my favorites was the 5 Genrations Salsa Kim Lanes was sampling. This sweet yet spicy recipe has been handed down generation through generation of Kim’s family, hence the name 5 Generations. The tagline Original San Antonio Recipe references where the salsa got its start. As a five year resident of the Alamo city, I definitely recognized the hallmarks of the roasted style of salsa so popular there.

You can find 5 Generations Salsa at area HyVee stores and the Mosers on Rangeline for around $4 a bottle. Or you can also order directly through the 5 Generations website. There you can also pick up a case for $45. Consider snagging one for hostess gifts or to bring to holiday parties.

Dude, Where’s My Food Truck?

Here is Seoul Taco! They are a St. Louis food truck that kills it when it comes to Korean BBQ!

I really wanted to bring the thunder with this post.  I am a 6 foot 270 pound man that can crush some food.  I’ve eaten all over Columbia. You name it and my butt has been in a chair there, probably more than once.  I wanted to write about the best restaurants in Columbia.  I wanted to write about schooners at Bambino’s, chili cheese dogs and root beer floats at Mugs Up, juicy burgers at Lee St. Deli, stretches at the Diner… the list goes on and on. That was my problem:  I was faced with too many choices. I just couldn’t decide.

The decision on what to write about drove me in to a massive eating binge.  I ate and ate and ate trying to decide what to write about, until finally I’d had enough.  I had gained 10 pounds and decided to join Weight Watchers, only eat gross food the rest of my life and be a skinny mini.  All the great food in Columbia had taken my life away from me.  The Nachos Bianco at Addison’s was the final straw.  Well, that and a cup of white chicken chili from Willies and some cicada ice cream from Sparky’s (yeah I saved some from a few months ago for a special occasion).

OK OK OK… you got me.  I am not really joining Weight Watchers, but I was in a week-long food coma after eating at every restaurant in the 573. During my quest I thought to myself, Columbia has everything.  How am I ever going to be able to choose what to write about?  Then it dawned on me, CoMO doesn’t have everything.  I shall write about the one thing we don’t have-Food Trucks!

There is something about food trucks that has me obsessed.  Almost as obsessed as the first time I had a deep friend Twinkie (don’t hate)!  Columbia is seriously missing out!  Raise your hand if you are tired of double cheeseburgers, or McDoubles!

I love eating out at Columbia restaurants, but who else is tired of racing downtown to grab a bite for lunch and trying to get back in an hour so your boss doesn’t fire you? For me, it’s a problem. With that, here are my top 10 reasons why food trucks are cool, and why CoMO needs ‘em.

1. I am getting old and food trucks make me feel cool.  I can watch a TV show about them (Great American Food Truck Race on Food Network) and see young people being a part of the movement.

2. After having a few adult beverages and waiting on a cab to pick you up who wouldn’t want a Korean taco? My boys from STL, Seoul Taco, could hook you up with that.

3. Can you imagine a dessert truck outside of Top 10 Wines? Heck, can you imagine a dessert truck anywhere? Yes please!

4. It’s quick, it’s not a drive-thru, and most of the time it’s a pretty dang good meal.

5. If the food is bogus we can always drag race the food trucks at the fairgrounds. Git-R-Done!

6. They come to you.  Makes it pretty easy to pop out of your office and snag some delicious food and get back to work.

7. Food Truck Meet Ups.  Who wouldn’t want to go out to Stephen’s Lake and enjoy several different cuisines from Korean BBQ to Dumplings to Sushi to Burgers… who knows what great food we might see?

8. It’s a business that thrives off of social media.  It’s so cool to see a tweet go out then an hour later 100 people are lined up wanting your food?  Pretty kewl (it’s how the young people spell cool these days).

9. They’re featured in the movie “Machete.” If Luz’s taco truck is good enough for Machete, it should be good enough for you.

10. They’re unique. A lot food trucks buck traditional when it comes to flavor and taste combinations, creating delicious new concoctions that make you scarf them down while you wonder how the heck they made those things taste SO good together.

11. (Bonus) Food trucks are like ice cream trucks for adults. I think we can all agree that is, Winning!

I love Columbia. I love eating. I don’t want to take anything away from this great city, but I sure as heck want to add to it.  Food trucks would add another bit of diversity to an ever growing city. Plus like I have stated before they are FREAKING cool!

Now after a weeklong food coma I think its best I take a nap.

CoMo Food: Recipes and a Foodie Find – Spicy Tiger Tails Bratwurst + Lemon Potato Salad

Neil in his element.

Don’t let his “caught off-guard” look fool you, Neil has been chomping at the bit to barbecue at our new house since well before we moved in. Weeks before closing he was already plotting where the grill would go and what we were going to make for our first bbq. He’s already eyeing new grills and more permanent fixtures for the deck, but for the time being, he’s happy to have meat, cooked over fire, and in his stomach.

He was so excited to grill in fact that he went a little crazy at the meat market. I’ve told you about Neil’s love for our local Mizzou Meat Market before, so it was no surprise that he came home on Friday with a little bit of everything. Steak, pork chops (which we froze for later), Spicy “Tiger Tails” bratwurst, and his favorite beef jerky.

Tiger Tails Bratwurst

Brats

Brats and Chicken

Here are the cooked brats. They are by far and away the best brats I have ever tasted, and I’m typically pretty picky. Fresh and juicy with the perfect balance of spice and creamy cheese. Heaven!

The steaks were huge! I feel like we ate tons of steak but still didn’t get through even half of it. We prepped them with simple salt and pepper. Amazing how little good steaks need to be just right.

Neighbor pups

The neighbors were getting jealous of all the good smells emanating from our deck. Poor pups!

Asparagus

I also decided to make a few sides, because unless you are Dennis Leary, meat in our house has to have some kind of vegetable to accompany it. I whipped up some easy grilled asparagus (asparagus drizzled with garlic, olive oil, sea salt and a little parmesan) and a lemon potato salad that Neil proclaimed as his new favorite.

Ingredients:

2 pounds small red potatoes
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1/3 cup light mayonnaise
1/4 cup chopped fresh dill
2 teaspoons thyme
1-2 teaspoons grated lemon peel

Directions:

1. Cover potatoes with salted cold water by 1 inch and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Drain potatoes in a colander.
2. When potatoes cool enough to handle, quarter, then toss with lemon juice and salt in a large bowl.
3. Whisk together greek yogurt, mayonnaise, dill, thyme and grated lemon peel in a bowl until blended. Whisk in additional salt (and pepper, if desired) to taste, then add to potatoes and toss to coat. Serve warm or cool after refrigerating.

I love potato salad because it’s so effortless. I probably went a little overboard with the Greek yogurt, but I just can’t get enough of the stuff and a little extra is never a bad thing right? The citrus is the perfect compliment to a creamy potato salad and almost makes it taste a little like a dessert. It was fabulous, but the brats were by far the best part of the entire meal. How many times have we thought about trying them and passed them up? We’re definitely kicking ourselves. Mark our words, we will NOT be making that mistake again!

CoMo Food : Missouri Foodie Find

Last month I attended the Drink Local Wine conference featuring Missouri Wines. There were lovely gift bags for the attendees filled with wine accessories and a few delicious snacks. One that immediately caught my attention were the chocolate dipped pretzels from the St. Louis company Mom’s Originals.

They take snacking to a new level by elevating pretzels to dessert status. I was a little leery because I am not always a huge fan of nuts. But soon I was lost in the caramel/chocolate/salty goodness. There’s something about that sweet/salty combination that gets me every time. And I even loved the pecans.

You can’t get them in Columbia yet, though I have sent them an email begging them to stock them in a local shop like Tallulah’s or coffee place like Coffee Zone. You can however order through their website. They make the perfect gift, party favor, or just snack to have around the house. Want to know more? You can also like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. You can also check to see where they carry them in Missouri.

By the way, I wasn’t compensated in any way for this post. I just really dig their pretzels.
