CoMO Sports: #MIZforJoplin

The University Of Missouri has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Joplin on sales of this simple $14.95 t-shirt, alone.

Most of us have done or are doing whatever is in our ability to continue help our brothers and sisters in Joplin.

Some of us have power, some of us don’t. Some of us have money, some of us don’t. Some of us have a lot, some of us don’t have much to spare.

The University of Missouri has a lot of a lot. They have power, they have money, they have reach, they have trucks, they have good hearts, they have hundreds of young, elite 18-23 year old student-athletes that will lift heavy items at the sound of a coach’s whistle.

When news of the Joplin tornado attack took over television sets from New York to Los Angeles, it reached everybody.

They say, if you attend Mizzou, you are a “True Son Of Missouri”. Some take that seriously, some… not so much. It’s cute, it’s in the fight song, it’s… whatever.

Well, there’s one particular former Tiger from Texas that was KNOWN throughout his playing career as a “Tiger from Texas”. But, over the years, this guy has proven to be nothing short of the epitome of a “True Son Of Missouri”.

Chase Daniel.

Not only did the news of Joplin reach Chase in New Orleans (where he has won a Superbowl ring as a member of the Saints), it really affected him. When the Missouri Football team decided to collect multiple tractor trailers full of donated items, and haul them down to Joplin… Chase Daniel wanted to play for Mizzou one more time.

In 90-degree heat last week and over the weekend in Joplin, you could see 300-pound offensive and defensive linemen wearing their “One State. One Spirit. One Mizzou.” t-shirt, lifting massive wreckage of what used to be a home and tossing it aside like garden lettuce on their double-cheeseburger.

You could also see that 6-foot firecracker quarterback with the stubble and the backwards ballcap, sweating it out with them.

Whatever “True Son” means to you, is up to you. If it means nothing, so be it. Thank goodness it means a great deal to some people… including a kid from Texas that plays football in New Orleans.
