Last Month in Columbia Tour

Jeff Rice is a faculty member at the University of Missouri, but he has recently accepted a new position at the University of Kentucky and will be leaving Columbia at the end of the semester. For a college town like Columbia, this is not an uncommon occurrence. Aside from faculty like Jeff, students and others will come and go with the ending and beginning of each new semester. For Jeff’s last month in town, he’s identified a few spots he’d like to visit. This post was lifted with permission from Jeff’s beer blog Make Mine Potato, a beer geek’s beer blog that doesn’t review beers. Whether you’re leaving or stay this month, maybe you should make a point of visiting the locations listed below.

April 24, 2011

As we finished off the experiment known as “matzoh pizza” or “I’ll never make that again” tonight, my wife raised an important point: We have to do our last month in Columbia tour. It’s time to make sure we hit all the places we like to eat at and that we will likely never eat at again. Our daughter helped think this through. On our list are:

  • Sycamore- lunch and dinner and beer, of course. Sycamore is our favorite place in town, and we will very much miss it, as well as Mike and Sanford.
  • Uprise – lunch. Reuben and soup likely for me.
  • A Cafe Berlin breakfast. This is even though Cafe Berlin has never mastered the art of roasting potatoes evenly. Our visit will likely be early enough that we not wait forever. That means 8:30 Saturday morning.
  • Stone 44 – new to town but a big favorite for the house made pretzel rolls, fries, and burgers.
  • Murry’s – we’ll beat the the 70 year old crowd by hitting our regular time, 5 pm. I’ve eaten at Murry’s many times over the last four years and almost always ordered the same thing: burger and fries.
  • Booches – maybe we’ll visit for sentimental reasons. And we have to time it right so that we don’t wait forever.
  • Sparky’s. I’m the king of ice cream, but my daughter likes Sparky’s. Cake batter for the wife, chocolate for the girl, blueberry for me.
  • Broadway – this is an agreed maybe. The food did get better the last few months, but the beer is still not cutting it (though guest taps are typically fine). Maybe a brunch for the house made corn beef.

My wife does want to throw eggs at Jina Yoo’s. Long waits for food. The last time we did take out, it was awful. I remember the time that they had run out of rib eye on a Friday at 6pm. As Trillin might say, you do want to throw rocks at Jina Yoo’s. And I’ve been asked to give my wife a full Mother’s Day so that she can sit in one of her favorite coffee shops all day long. I assume she’ll pick Coffee Zone, where the rugelach is tasty when fresh, where they serve coffee in a tall clear glass, and where I picked up a couple of gyros the night Judah was being born, and snuck them into the room so my wife could eat before delivery. Maybe I can get a sit at Sycamore all day long and drink beer pass, though they will probably kick me out after lunch is over.
