Dude, Where’s My Food Truck?

Here is Seoul Taco! They are a St. Louis food truck that kills it when it comes to Korean BBQ!

I really wanted to bring the thunder with this post.  I am a 6 foot 270 pound man that can crush some food.  I’ve eaten all over Columbia. You name it and my butt has been in a chair there, probably more than once.  I wanted to write about the best restaurants in Columbia.  I wanted to write about schooners at Bambino’s, chili cheese dogs and root beer floats at Mugs Up, juicy burgers at Lee St. Deli, stretches at the Diner… the list goes on and on. That was my problem:  I was faced with too many choices. I just couldn’t decide.

The decision on what to write about drove me in to a massive eating binge.  I ate and ate and ate trying to decide what to write about, until finally I’d had enough.  I had gained 10 pounds and decided to join Weight Watchers, only eat gross food the rest of my life and be a skinny mini.  All the great food in Columbia had taken my life away from me.  The Nachos Bianco at Addison’s was the final straw.  Well, that and a cup of white chicken chili from Willies and some cicada ice cream from Sparky’s (yeah I saved some from a few months ago for a special occasion).

OK OK OK… you got me.  I am not really joining Weight Watchers, but I was in a week-long food coma after eating at every restaurant in the 573. During my quest I thought to myself, Columbia has everything.  How am I ever going to be able to choose what to write about?  Then it dawned on me, CoMO doesn’t have everything.  I shall write about the one thing we don’t have-Food Trucks!

There is something about food trucks that has me obsessed.  Almost as obsessed as the first time I had a deep friend Twinkie (don’t hate)!  Columbia is seriously missing out!  Raise your hand if you are tired of double cheeseburgers, or McDoubles!

I love eating out at Columbia restaurants, but who else is tired of racing downtown to grab a bite for lunch and trying to get back in an hour so your boss doesn’t fire you? For me, it’s a problem. With that, here are my top 10 reasons why food trucks are cool, and why CoMO needs ‘em.

1. I am getting old and food trucks make me feel cool.  I can watch a TV show about them (Great American Food Truck Race on Food Network) and see young people being a part of the movement.

2. After having a few adult beverages and waiting on a cab to pick you up who wouldn’t want a Korean taco? My boys from STL, Seoul Taco, could hook you up with that.

3. Can you imagine a dessert truck outside of Top 10 Wines? Heck, can you imagine a dessert truck anywhere? Yes please!

4. It’s quick, it’s not a drive-thru, and most of the time it’s a pretty dang good meal.

5. If the food is bogus we can always drag race the food trucks at the fairgrounds. Git-R-Done!

6. They come to you.  Makes it pretty easy to pop out of your office and snag some delicious food and get back to work.

7. Food Truck Meet Ups.  Who wouldn’t want to go out to Stephen’s Lake and enjoy several different cuisines from Korean BBQ to Dumplings to Sushi to Burgers… who knows what great food we might see?

8. It’s a business that thrives off of social media.  It’s so cool to see a tweet go out then an hour later 100 people are lined up wanting your food?  Pretty kewl (it’s how the young people spell cool these days).

9. They’re featured in the movie “Machete.” If Luz’s taco truck is good enough for Machete, it should be good enough for you.

10. They’re unique. A lot food trucks buck traditional when it comes to flavor and taste combinations, creating delicious new concoctions that make you scarf them down while you wonder how the heck they made those things taste SO good together.

11. (Bonus) Food trucks are like ice cream trucks for adults. I think we can all agree that is, Winning!

I love Columbia. I love eating. I don’t want to take anything away from this great city, but I sure as heck want to add to it.  Food trucks would add another bit of diversity to an ever growing city. Plus like I have stated before they are FREAKING cool!

Now after a weeklong food coma I think its best I take a nap.

Jennifer K. Bukowsky

What do you do for money?

Fight to protect my clients’ rights, records and freedom at the Bukowsky Law Firm.

What do you do for fun?

Throw big parties, play cards, attend local events, relax at home with my husband and our two sons ages 4 and 2.

I would characterize my relationship with technology as:

temperamental.

Smart or dumb phone? What kind? If smart, what are the three apps you use most?

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. Zite (an incredible iPad app that pulls content from everywhere to create a personalized magazine)

Mac or PC or Other?

“It’s complicated.”  I bought a macbook air two weeks ago- my first mac.  But my law firm is still filled with PCs (for now).

I use twitter for …

Staying informed and marketing my law firm

I use facebook for …

Maintaining and building friendships and marketing my law firm.

Do you read any blogs? What are three of your favorites?

No regulars but I read many blog posts on law and politics when I see them on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Zite.  My husband has been telling me for probably 7 years now that I should set up a RSS feed but I haven’t gotten around to figuring out how to do that yet.  But I did finally listen to him and started both a business and a blog in the past year:   http://www.lawbuk.com.

I would characterize my relationship with technology as:

Madly in love with seperation anxieties.

Smart or dumb phone? What kind? If smart, what are the three apps you use most?

I use a Blackberry Curve. I tried the iPhone for awhile (and liked it), but I like BB’s durability. iPhone has been and will always be finicky. I once saw a college-aged girl CRYING because she had “dropped her iPone”. As far as apps, I’m simply Google, Facebook, and Twitter.

Mac or PC or Other?

Most of my work is primarily done on office PC’s. I can’t comment on Macintosh, because I haven’t worked much with Mac, but I’ve heard polarizing opinions.

I use twitter for …
Twitter has become my primary news & information source. Recently it has also become a great social experience. But still not quite the one and only…

I use facebook for …
I… Love… Facebook. Social, social, social. I talk to my friends MORE on Facebook than on the phone or in person. I cover the entire world (where most of my friends ARE worldly because they’re primarily in their 30′s). I have MET more people through Facebook than through any public face-to-face experience. It’s interwoven into our American society. Somebody should make a movie about it.

Do you read any blogs? What are three of your favorites?
I’m a blogger myself, so I read a lot of blogs. My favorites right now would be (former KC Star turned Sports Illustrated columnist) Joe Posnanski’s blog, Gabe DeArmond’s blog, and (entertainment blog) Just Jared.

Who are you?

I’m you. This is weird. We need to ask the therapist. Again.

What do you do for money?

It’s complicated … I write stuff, give these little talks, and I’m sort of a small business consultant, only without fancy shoes, a rich tan or good hair. Between my clients’ cars and my son’s therapists’ cars coming and going, I think my neighbors think I’m a drug dealer … which is okay, because it gives me neighborhood street cred.

What do you do for fun?

Play with my kids, travel, read. I coach my son’s Challenger League team. After a misspent youth, I’m settling into adulthood as the most boring person I know.

I would characterize my relationship with technology as:

Smart or dumb phone? What kind? If smart, what are the three apps you use most?

I have an iPhone. I love Reeder for RSS, Evernote for collecting and codifying stuff, and pUniverse for looking at the sky with my son. He’s way into outer space.

Mac or PC or Other?

I’ve been using one of those nice little MacBook Airs since November. Best computer I’ve ever used.

I use twitter for …

  1. Research and listening for clients
  2. A secondary RSS feed to find great articles
  3. Trying to be clever in 140 chars or less with my Gang of Nerds

I use facebook for …

  1. Sharing pics with my family
  2. Boring Delighting friends and family with stuff about my kids
  3. Trying to be clever with girls I was way too socially awkward to talk with in high school college my late twenties my early thirties. Correction: I’ve never done this. I am married to the only woman who’s ever interested me who I also happen to be afraid of.

Do you read any blogs? What are three of your favorites?

I read blogs every day. Like your favorite records, it’s hard to narrow it down to three. In addition to what I find on twitter, I love:

  1. Geek Alerts: For the Nerd Merchant in all of us …
  2. Zen Habits: Leo doesn’t write as much as he used to, but his archive is full of simple lessons on living, working and playing.
  3. Read & Trust: A group of writers whose subjects include tech, productivity and travel.

I actually had a different number three (a primarily travel blog) when I answered these questions on Monday, but on Tuesday his post was how to hack the NY Times paywall – which I think stinks. So I’m sad today because I just broke up with one of my favorite blogs.

I also like anything Kate Canterbury writes about her family for the Tribune … provided she doesn’t plan on writing how to hack the NY Times paywall.

Go-to menu item and restaurant in CoMo?

Hmm … the pancake burrito at Cafe Berlin for breakfast, a burger from Billiards for lunch, then for dinner we’ll do smoked wings at D. Rowe’s, followed by pizza at G & D, followed by Mississippi Mud pie or chocolate cream pie out at 63 Diner, followed by a stress test and an EKG.

I’ll skip the philosophy jokes and just go with “Leslie Scott.”

What do you do for money?

I co-host the BXR Morning Show on 102.3 BXR alongside Simon Rose and do behind-the-scenes stuff for BXR as well.

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy cooking and baking, and even moreso enjoy dining. I counteract my love of food with running and yoga.  We’re lucky to have The Blue Note and Mojo’s in Columbia, and I try to see as many shows as my schedule allows.  Shopping.  Above all, sitting on a patio with a cold beverage, a nosh and good friends / conversation is perfection.
I would characterize my relationship with technology as:

Love / Hate. Big time. I love to be connected, but sometimes it’s nice to unplug and remember life goes on away from the computer.  I’ve been known to take “unplugged weekends.”  So much about technology has made my job easier, and my life easier, but it only takes one computer crash, one hard drive meltdown or one wrong line of code to remind me that this, too, is not always in my control.  I’m very technologically savvy though, just ask my parents.

Smart or dumb phone? What kind? If smart, what are the three apps you use most?

Smart phone.  I have the HTC Incredible right now and I love it (major credit goes to my boyfriend for encouraging me to go Android). I’ve pretty much come to terms with Google owning a piece of my soul. I swear by Gmail and my Google calendars (plural, yes).  Besides Gmail, my most used apps are Twidroyd, Google Maps and Yelp (fun while traveling!).

Mac or PC or Other?

I’m a PC.

I use twitter for …

connecting with interesting people in Columbia and people in radio. Getting more involved in the #como scene has allowed me to meet and interact with some intelligent, fun people that I may not have otherwise known on a personal level.  Twitter’s great for finding things to talk about on the air in the morning, too.

I use facebook for …

looking at pictures of people I went to high school with. Admit it, that’s why you use Facebook, too.  I also keep up with friends from around the country.  I get tired of Facebook, but I cannot argue its usefulness.

Do you read any blogs? What are three of your favorites?

I read a few blogs here and there.  Postsecret, if you consider that a blog, is my favorite.  Twitter has changed how I read blogs, as I usually just read as bloggers tweet things that sounds interesting.  I’m enjoying watching Como Collective come together, as there are so many great bloggers in town. (Shameless, but true.)

Go-to menu item and restaurant in CoMo?

I have many go-tos. We dine out far too often. I consider it my way to support the local economy, right? You know what Columbia needs, though? A breakfast delivery service. OK, maybe I just need a personal breakfast delivery service… but sometimes it would be nice to have a proper hot breakfast while broadcasting in the morning!

I would characterize my relationship with technology as:

Love/Hate.  I love it and it hates me.  But for some reason we get along really well.

Smart or dumb phone? What kind? If smart, what are the three apps you use most?

I just upgraded my phone to the new T-Mobile G2X.  It has Tegra 2 dual processors and is super fast, like Jimmy John’s freaky fast!  I really love the Android platform and have used it going on 2 years now.  The 3 apps that I use most include Twidroyd, Pykl3 (weather app), and Solitaire.  But Seesmic and my Mint.com app are other favs.

Mac or PC or Other?

I started out as an all Mac guy but since my industry uses either PC or Linux/Unix I’ve quickly become a PC guy.  There is more fun software for weather on a PC vs a Mac.

I use twitter for …

As my news platform.  Yes I work in the news media, but in this day and age, if you want info on breaking news, you’ll get it on Twitter before finding it in the paper, radio or TV. I personally send out regular weather updates on Twitter with current conditions and a forecast for cities around Mid-MO.

I use facebook for …

work.  But it’s used in a similar fashion.. to relay the weather message.  I find that in times of severe weather I get more feedback and information from this outlet.  This is very helpful and at times crucial when there is ongoing severe weather.  There is obviously a lot more characters to use to pass along the information too.

Do you read any blogs? What are three of your favorites?

I’m not much of a blog guy but I do enjoy reading a few of them.  I have my Google Reader set up to look for new ones.  I follow most of the bloggers in CoMO but the 3 that I follow on a regular basis:  Capturing CoMO, Show Me Eats, and Building International Coalitions Through Beer and Pavement.  I was recently selected by NASA to attend the STS134 launch and since then I’ve found a blog that is about Science and Food and has some fun experiments with both.  Stay at home moms, science teachers and just the nerdy types should check this one out  it’s called The Kitchen Pantry Scientist.

Recently it’s been Bleu’s Cobb Salad or the Scallops, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on that menu.  For more casual I still like the 63 Diner north of town and their chili mac.

Sports are okay I guess. <sick laugh>

    Mac or PC or Other?

I did the Mac thing for 2 years, to really see for myself.  I gave it the full shot so I would get over the learning hump.  They are wonderful machines, but the differences aren’t really that great when yo get right down to it.  I live in a PC world, and I got tired of pulling out my PC/Mac-Mac/PC dictionary to translate. And at the end of the day, I don’t need a machine to make me feel good about myself or make a statement;  I just gotta get some work done.

    I use twitter for …

Business. We can light up 3500+ cell phones in a blink and foist our capitalistic agenda. For free!

    I use facebook for …

Business. We have 25K+ fans that we can foist our capitalistic agenda on. For free!

Do you read any blogs? What are three of your favorites?

I don’t read any blogs. I’m too busy throwing a party, playing with my family or friends, or playing in the dirt.

Go-to menu item and restaurant in CoMo?

Besides my own joint? Hands down, it’s a B&B Bagel sandwich, Honey Wheat bagel, turkey, onions, green peppers, and spicy brown mustard. And a 4X shot of straight up espresso. No milk or latte or sprinkles or any of that fu-fu. (WWJWD?)

Complete this sentence: Archers of Loaf is/are:

Of having the great desire to be in the searching of vendoring of cigars greatly.

Friends are visiting from out-of-town. You’re for-sure taking them to:

My wife would take the wimmin-folk say shopping in the District; but I’d take the boys out to my dirt pile.

My second-favorite city/town/hamlet/state/country/province in the world is:

Chicago or KC. Both close enough to drive, big enough to have almost everything, an far away enough to be an adventure. And international enough to have great vegetarian Indian cuisine, somewhere.

PS: WWJWD = What Would John Wayne Do?

    Thanks, Kurt!

CoMo Tech will be a regular feature on The CoMo Collective.
