Sherwood Park high school curling team takes home provincial gold

Congratulations to the Archbishop Jordan Catholic High School (ABJ) Scots boys curling team for taking home gold from the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association curling championship.

The championships was in Drayton Valley in late February, with the Scots winning the title game 4-3 against the Paul Row Raiders after scoring two points on the last throw.

“When sliding down the ice to the other side, getting ready to throw the rock, I was feeling a little anxious because my hits were a little wonky that game,” ABJ Scots skip Lucas Sawiak recalled of his emotions leading up to the shot. “After the shot, I felt relieved that this event was now over.”

Not only did the team bring home provincial gold, but just a week before they had also won the Metro Edmonton High School Athletics championship. According to coach Steve Perozak, the teams two goals were to win regionals and make it to provincials.

”I knew our boys had the talent to win gold, but so did the other three teams in the ASAA playoffs,” said Perozak. “I'm happy that, by the grace of God, it was our turn this time.”
